Viktor Witkowski, Priest, 20″ x 16″, oil on canvas, 2012 Catholic priest Andreas L. was sentenced in German court in 2012. He was accused of sexually abusing three boys between 2004 and 2011 in 280 cases. German law allows perpetrators to remain anonymous. Last names are never given and when journalists and photographers are allowed to sit in court, the accused have the right to protect their identity by covering their face. In most cases, the perpetrator’s legal team will provide a binder that can be used to cover one’s face.
Viktor Witkowski, Defaced Rush Limbaugh Bust, 19″ x 15″, oil on canvas, 2012 When far-right agitator Rush Limbaugh (1951-2021) received a bust in his honor which was installed in the state Capitol’s Hall of Famous Missourians, I decided to make a painting in response. I imagined what his bust would look like if it had been defaced with an unknown substance that could have been paint or ice cream.
